IGNOU Convergence Scheme

The IGNOU, New Delhi and Kanchi Mamunivar Centre for Postgraduate Studies (Autonomous) (KMCPGS), Government of Puducherry have entered an MOU for running IGNOU courses such as Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Computer Applications (MCA), Certificate in Functional English (CFE) and Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication (PGDJMC) from June 2009.

MCA and MBA courses with international quality at affordable costs, combining the conventional system with open and distance learning are now possible at this Centre. The two postgraduate programmes have been launched at KMCPGS under the Indira Gandhi National Open University's (IGNOU) Convergence of Open and Distance Learning and Conventional System Scheme. Evening and weekend classes, regular monitoring, increased number of contact classes, assignments, assessment and many more features on par with the regular stream of learning are the salient features of the scheme.

This is definitely not just a Distance Education Programme but rather a Convergence Scheme. It has all the features of the regular stream provided by an open university. These programmes have been approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Obtaining a dual postgraduate degree is also possible as the classes for MCA and MBA courses are conducted twice during the weekdays from 4.30 p.m. onwards and at weekends.

A number of students currently pursuing M.Com. at KMCPGS have opted for MBA under the convergence scheme, while those who are doing M.Sc. Computer Science and M.Sc. Mathematics at KMCPGS have enrolled for MCA. This enables them to leave the campus after two years with a dual postgraduate degree.

The aim of the Convergence Scheme is to cater to students from the underprivileged, rural and average income groups who aspire to pursue quality MBA/MCA programmes. With IGNOU funds, a model classroom has been set up for the courses. Part of the income generated through these courses is being used for the infrastructure development of the Centre. The model classroom has Internet facility, LCD, EDUSAT connectivity, DVD/CDs for each course and many more features providing a conducive and disciplined ambience for a quality-oriented and industry-driven learning experience. Admissions for the two courses are open throughout the year. There are two sessions every year, one starting from January and the other from June.

For MBA, the eligibility is any degree with OPENMAT entrance examination conducted by IGNOU. Those who have cleared CAT/MAT are exempted from OPENMAT. For MCA, there is no entrance examination.

Students who have completed BCA, B.Sc. Computer Science and B.Sc. Information Technology are eligible. There will be a total of 21 papers for MBA spanning five semesters. Each paper will cost Rs. 1,000. For MCA, the fee will be Rs. 8,000 per semester for six semesters.

One of the students, D.Gnanasekaran, has won the All India Gold Medal for his first rank in PGDJMC in 2011. Many of our MCA and MBA students have got placed in very prestigious corporate undertakings in Puducherry and other States. Also, many IAS officers have enrolled for the MBA courses.
